Ateneo de Manila University Begins Renewable Energy Shift with SolX Technologies

On May 24, 2024, Ateneo de Manila University achieved a milestone in its sustainability commitments by securing a renewable energy supply with the help of SolX Technologies Inc. SolX, a startup founded by Ateneo alumni, has been providing its digital energy solutions to facilitate the university’s shift. The transition officially commenced on May 26, 2024, at the Loyola Heights campus in Quezon City, placing Ateneo six years ahead of its target.

Prior to this partnership, Ateneo had been generating close to 10% of its energy requirements through solar panels installed on 13 campus buildings since 2020. Phase 2 of the Ateneo Solar Power Project, expected to be completed in 2024, aims to increase renewable energy generation to 20% of the university's total energy consumption.

SolX Technologies, co-founded by Ateneo alumni CEO Sergius Santos (BS Electronics and Communications Engineering ’17), COO Matt Tan (BS Management ’17), and Senior VP Bradley Cua (BS Legal Management ’19), helps Filipino industries secure cheaper and sustainable energy through its digital solutions. Through its Energy Portfolio Management (EPM) service, SolX’s data-driven approach helped Ateneo lay out its energy transition roadmap.

Fr. Roberto Yap SJ emphasized the significance of this collaboration: “The contract allows the University to tell Meralco that the power supply should not come from coal or LNG (liquefied natural gas), but rather from renewable sources.”

COO Matt Tan expressed his pride in the partnership: “Ateneo has always held a special place in our hearts. To be part of the university’s sustainability journey is an honor for us at SolX. We’re committed to supporting Ateneo every step of the way as it advances towards its green energy goals.”

CEO Sergius Santos added, “This is more than just a partnership for SolX. We’re deeply invested in Ateneo’s success and are excited to help make a lasting impact on the campus we love.”

The signing was attended by Ateneo’s Vice President for Administration, Rodolfo P. Ang, alongside SolX executives CEO Sergius Santos, COO Matt Tan, and Senior VP Bradley Cua.
